Aww, Look at the Tree!

Tomorrow night at Ghirardelli Square is the time to look at the tree! The annual tree lighting ceremony will kick off at at 5:30 p.m., with emcee’ing by local meteorologist Roberta Gonzales and appearance by Santa — the stars align! The Royal Underground Theatre Company will also perform RENT’s “Seasons of Love.” If you’re there early, catch performances by the Contra Costa Chorale, Andy Kong, and the Merrie Olde Choralers beginning at 2 p.m.

I’ll most likely be recovering from my second leftover turkey, cranberry, stuffing, and mash potato sandwich at that point, so you won’t find Yours Truly in attendance. Happy Thanksgiving!

Coit Tower: The Next Hollywood?

Thanksgiving night, Coit Tower will moonlight as a silver screen, boasting projections of films about the American Indian occupation of Alcatraz on its cylindrical form.Depending on where your home is perched on Russian Hill, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the films, along with folks in North Beach, the Wharf, Chinatown, and the Financial District. To hear the audio, dig up your time capsule, pull out your radio, put some fresh, dusty AA batteries in it, and tune to KPOO 89.5. Yes, there is a station called KPOO. Gobble, gobble!

The Push and Shove of My Evening Commute

During the morning commute, bus riders sit in sleepy silence, coffees and Blackberries in hand, white headphones in ears. But on the way home from work, they actually acknowledge each other, sometimes sharing what I call a ‘MUNI moment.’

Yesterday, I had one of these moments – a few minutes, really. As my 41 bus arrived, an older woman, probably 65, ran towards me, literally shoving me off the sidewalk. Ow! She continued running until she weaseled her way into the bus’s rear door, but not before she feistily shoved three others. We all shared laughs over our bafflement, while telling tales of other MUNI etiquette faux-pas. Then the woman, shown here, stepped down to exit the bus, and the doors did not open. “Push,” said one of my new bus buddies. “You know how to do that, don’t you?”

Disgruntled Goat to Replace Bar Johnny?

If you’ve ever eaten (or had a bottomless mimosa adventure) at Bar Johnny (2209 Polk), you may have noticed that the bar and restaurant’s receipts read “Tablespoon.” The name is residue from a former bistro, which was converted into Bar Johnny in 2007. Back in June, SF Eater got the scoop that the team from Tonic (2360 Polk) was in the process of buying Bar Johnny, and turning it into a new bar/restaurant.

As it turns out, it seems that the reason for the wonky receipts is that Bar Johnny had still been operating under Tablespoon’s liquor license — I am sure legally, no rumors here! That license has been canceled, a new license issued, and the new owner of 2209 Polk is using the handle “Disgruntled Goat Inc.” (more…)

Filbert Street, You Are OUT. Auf Wiedersehen.

For who knows how long, the block Filbert Street between Leavenworth and Hyde has been heralded as one of the city’s two steepest streets, tied with 22nd between Church and Vicksburg at a 31.5% grade. filbert

Teetering over the edge of hill, looking out at Coit Tower, most would not venture to dispute this claim. But blogger Weather Sealed hopped in his coach and took San Francisco’s steep hills for a test drive. In conclusion, he found that preeminent block of Filbert to have the fourth steepest grade, with Prentiss between Chapman and Powhattan taking the cake at a 37% grade. “Thank you so much for this opportunity,” said Filbert, with an air kiss.

100 Is the Luckiest Number When You’re Talkin’ Tacos

1Everyday this week through Sunday, Nick’s Crispy Tacos (Broadway and Polk) will comp the entire order of their 100th customer each day — up to 100 smackers worth of finger-licking food. I’m not a mathematician or anything, but I’m thinking my chances are pretty slim. Perhaps the Walgreens’ panhandler can count the customers as they enter and alert me when he sees number 99.

Pumpkin ale is for the birds. Wine is where it’s at on Thanksgiving — unless you’re WT, in which case, a keg of Natty Lite would be proper form. So it’s time to stock up on vino for the upcoming holiday. Next Wednesday, Nov. 18, William Cross Wine Merchants (2253 Polk at Green) will host its ninth annual Wines for Turkey Day event from 6 to 9 p.m. Along with some complimentary turkey (!), you can guzzle a tasting of gobble gobble grape for $15, plus tax.
