According to Crime Blotter, around 1 a.m. Thursday morning, “Two men were reportedly fighting on the 2200 block of Polk [at Vallejo], and one hit the other with a baseball bat. The guy who got hit is not suffering life threatening injuries, and no one’s been arrested.” Did anyone see this or hear about it? My guess is some green-shirted dudes spilled onto the streets from Bullitt, Green’s, or the Bucc after a few too many shots of Jameson’s and car bombs.

P.S. How does someone just happen to have a baseball bat with him at 1 in the morning?

A Eulogy for Nob Hill Tavern

Aww, man! I feel like all of my favorite watering holes are evaporating into thin air lately. The latest is Nob Hill Tavern (1390 California at Hyde), which according to Eater SF is being taken over (overtaken!) by the owners of R Bar. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of R Bar, and the bartenders there are especially nice. So I’m sure Pour (the new name of the place) will be well-liked. But, Nob Hill Tavern, despite its somewhat sketchy clientele, was a favorite for a few reasons.

The only reason I ever happened upon it to begin with is because I searched Yelp for the keyword “darts” — I love darts! There are few places to play darts that have more than one board and enough room to throw without invading someone’s personal space; NHT has five or six I think. Subsidiarily, I invented a magical game there: yoga darts! Not quite sober, of course. And to throw something sentimental central in there, it was the place where I learned that I had become an aunt. As you may know, being an aunt offers all the perks of parenting, without any of the responsibility; love it!

I hope the R Bar team leaves at least one dart board for me, preferably with a plaque engraved with the words “Polk Sheet.” Thanksss!

A friend of a friend’s cat was killed by a coyote at Hyde and Greenwich this morning. “Sounds ridiculous, but true,” as he put it. Welcome to the wild, wild West! The Chronicle actually covered the attack too, but of course in proper journalistic form said the coyote is only “a suspect”  — did you know the “innocent until proven guilty” rule applies to wild dogs, too?

CBS noted an uptick in coyote sightings a couple months ago, which the SF Animal Care and Control spokesperson actually discredited, saying there haven’t been any more sightings than usual, so who knows. But animal control did warn that the animals reside “in any sustainable area in the city, any sizable park.” George Sterling Memorial Park (at Hyde and Greenwich) is one of these, and there was actually a notice posted there warning locals of the danger. So be careful folks. Seal up your garbage cans securely and keep your pets indoors at night — even if you own a roadrunner.

I’ll admit I’ve lived a fairly sheltered life, but crime is really getting to me lately. My friends who live a bit over Russian Hill just heard that Franklin Market Liquors on Franklin near Lombard (blue awning) was robbed tonight. Two guys came into the store and held the customers and owner at gunpoint, stole purses, and hit the owner with a bag. Don’t know too many other details. I know this can happen anywhere, and thank God no one was hurt, but man . . . guns are scary!

About a month ago, I moved into a new apartment not far from Lombard St. Around 1:30 a.m. after taking a half a dozen Zipcar trips from my old digs, I finally unloaded my last moving box. As I walked to my new building, I noticed a haggard, toothless woman standing in the doorway. I asked if I could help her, and she responded, “I am a prostitute and the dude in Apt. 3 called me. Can’t you help me out?” Seeing as my place was Apt. 3, I knew she was bluffing, and just wanted to come in. So I made an excuse and tried to sneak my way past her. She then proceeded to call me a b*tch when I wouldn’t let her in. Welcome to the neighborhood, I thought.

During my two years in my previous apartment just two blocks away, I’d never had an experience like this. Could the local flavor really change so much in just a few hundred feet? As it turns out, it may have been more about climate than geography.

A friend just emailed me asking if I’d heard anything about an accident that happened last night on Union St. between Larkin and Polk. She says, “Some (presumably) super drunk driver totaled at least five parked cars as he bashed into them on his way down the hill at about 1 a.m.” I haven’t heard anything about the accident, or been able to find any details. Have you?

Eater SF included Zarzuela and Swan Oyster Depot in its list of 38 Essential San Francisco Restaurants, Zarzuela a newcomer to the oft-edited index this month. According to Eater, the “highly elite group covers the entire city, spans myriad cuisines and collectively, satisfies all of your restaurant needs, save for those occasions when you absolutely must spend half a paycheck.” Score one for Russian Hill! And one for Polk!

3659603050_8b9bdba377_bToday an SF judge delayed a decision to lift a 2006 injuction on an ambitious ’05 bicycle plan, which would add 34 additional miles of bike lanes for San Francisco’s growing cycling population. The judge asked for additional briefs to be submitted from both sides by Nov. 12 — at which point the injunction will either be lifted, or remain until March 2010 at an environmental hearing of the plan. But regardless, the MTA will go ahead painting 20 shared-lane markings, installing 5 bike racks and do 400 feet of striping per day. Curious how the plan could affect the neighborhood? (more…)

UPDATE: Yesterday, I speculated about who the new tenant in the former Swallowtail space at 2217 Polk St. would be. As it turns out, it will be another antiques store — yay! — although not Arbor. I should have more information on the new proprietor next week. So stay tuned. And until then, don’t buy any furniture.
