Fuck You All, a traveling exhibition of work by American photographer Glen Friedman — known for his photography of skateboarders and musicians like the Beastie Boys, Fugazi, Black Flag, etc. — arrives at 941Geary (just off of Polk Street) on Saturday and will run through Dec. 31. The exhibition will feature some unviewed collaborations between Friedman and media darling Shepard Fairey, who’s also made his mark in the area with his hot button Obama posters.

If you’re interested in this sort of “subculture,” you should definitely also check out the film Beautiful Losers, which highlights the work of many of Friedman and Fairey’s contemporaries.

Loving this retro 1962 photo of Alioto’s and Fisherman’s Wharf, from the vantage point of Taylor and Jefferson. I spotted it on my favorite Americana blog, A Continuous Lean. While the automobiles do stir up feelings of nostalgia, the rest of the scene remains notably unchanged today.

The Purple Cow
by Gelett Burgess

I never saw a purple cow;
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you anyhow;
I’d rather see than be one!

This famous poem was written by Gelett Burgess in 1895 and published in his literary magazine, The Lark. Burgess and his contemporary bohemians often gathered in Russian Hill at 1032 Broadway (at Taylor) for dinners, discussion, storytelling, and other events.

After Andy Warhol printed Cow in 1966, Burgess should have written something like this:

I never saw Mr. Warhol;
I never think I’ll meet him;
But I can tell you anyhow;
I’d like to own his screenprint!

Photo by Hiroshi Sugimoto, from the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.Alhambra’s got international appeal! According to Flickr:

Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948. ‘Alhambra, San Francisco,’ (1992) is part of a long-standing and on-going project of photographing theatres. Sugimoto records the ambient light created by the cinema screen. The drama of the light effect is balanced by the ‘neutrality’ of the camera position, always directly facing the screen.

A poem. Published in 1915 in Sunset: The Pacific Monthly, Volume 35.

Night and the hill to me!
Silence no sound that jars;
Above, of stars a sea;
Below, a sea of stars!

Trancèd in slumber’s sway,
The city at its feet.
A tang of salty spray
Blends with the odors sweet

From garden-close and wall,
Where the madroño stood,
And tangled chaparral,
In the solitude.

Here, from Long Ago,
Rezánov’s sailors sleep;
There the Presidio;
Beyond the plumèd steep;

The waters, mile on mile,
Foam-fringed with feathery white;
The beaconed fortress isle,
And Yerba Buena’s light.

One of our very own readers, Christina, is hosting an art auction benefit for Haiti, Hope Force Art Benefit & Silent Auction, next Thursday, May 6 at Space Gallery (1141 Polk St.) from 7pm to midnight. “It should be a really fun event with music, bar, desserts, and great art,” she says. Pretty much sums up all my interests in one fell swoop!

Proceeds benefit Hope Force International, a disaster relief organization, DJ Danny White will be spinning, and pastries will be donated by The Heart Baker. Suggested door donation is $5-$10, so have a heart and bring some cash.

Will I see you there?

Just in time for the holidays, Russian Hill artist and stylist Danielle Goodman, has launched her debut apparel collection, Anomaly Threads, online today. With tees for guys and dolls bearing images of elegant elephants and inspirational catch-phrases, the goods are must-haves for under your cardigans this season. Next up in 2010 is a kid’s collection, but for now, I’m happy these trix aren’t for kids.

1When wine snobs and art world-lings join forces, do you think their pretensions are neutralized? You can soon find out. This Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., Polk’s ‘premium wine outlet’ Spencer and Daniels is hosting a wine tasting bash at Space Gallery (1141 Polk at Sutter). For a $5 advance ticket ($10 at the door), you can taste 16 wines, courtesy of S&D’s knowledgeable staff, and enjoy an art exhibit, wine giveaways, and live tunes. This apparently is the second coming of this extravaganza, and the first was a sold-out success with a line out the door. So it’s a smart move to get your tix — and dinner — early (buy them at S&D). Honestly, it does sound like a great party to me. I’ll have to swoop by after I listen to the country’s foremost erotica authors tell spicy bedtime stories at Litquake.
