Mark your calendars, people! On Sunday, September 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friends of the Urban Forest will host a free walking tour about the trees and history of Russian Hill. Meeting at the Vallejo Street Stairs (between Taylor and Mason, aka Ina Coolbrith Park), certified arborist Ted Kipping and local historian and architect Joe Butler will take y’all on an undoubtedly steep hike through the area, checking out interesting plants, gorgeous views, and some historical landmarks.

I worked with FUF to plan a tree-planting service day for my alumni association last year and had a wonderful experience. They do a fantastic job of planting and maintaining trees in public spaces all over the city, ensuring that our urban environment is also a green one. The team really knows what they’re talking about and I was surprised by how much I learned in just one day of putting Jacarandas in the soil. So, I’m sure it’ll be a good experience. If anything, you can consider it your workout for the weekend.

thehillsThe SF Department of Public Works has finally repaired a treacherously chipped set of concrete stairs (see a before photo here) and a wall on Broadway St. at Taylor. I would say, “It’s about time,” but on second thought, it’s a luxury that our city’s steep hills even have stairs. You know . . . in like other parts of the world people have to roll down the hills.

SF-based photographer Trevor Christian shot this stunning, saturated cityscape from the top of Russian Hill somewhere along Vallejo. He hints at the location in saying, “there’s an adorable little garden that stretches down the hill ultimately leading into North Beach,” above which is “a small (we’re talkin’ like 12′ x 14′ small) meadow cloaked by a few trees and shrubs, a sublime location to take a nap in the sun or gaze out at the urban jungle of downtown.”downtown01cropro02Experience tells me his “g-spot,” as he calls it, is at (or just above) the intersection of Taylor and Vallejo, the secret garden otherwise known as Ina Coolbrith Park. The park was named in honor of Ina Coolbrith, a librarian at the Oakland Free Library, who mentored a 12-year-old burgeoning author Jack London, and who was also the first poet laureate of California. To get your Nick’s crispy taco ass up to Taylor and Vallejo is a feat, but this image tells me it’s worth it.

On my bus ride to work at 9:15 a.m. this morning, I noticed a tow truck attempting to remove an extremely ravaged car from just South of the intersection of Union and Taylor Streets. For once, my fellow MUNI riders took a break from their drone-like BBM-ing and all gasped in unison. Were I not already running late as usual, I’d have hopped out and taken a photo for y’all.6976083_600x338As it turns out, the SF Appeal did the paparazzi work for me. The collision happened around 2:45 a.m., when a white SUV headed Northbound on Taylor plowed into several parked cars. No word on injuries sustained. Sounds likes a clear case of boozing and driving to me. Then again, maybe in an attempt to revive his notoriety, O.J. Simpson took his Ford Bronco for another high-speed chase.

UPDATE: The hit-and-run driver fled the scene, leaving two injured passengers stuck inside his overturned SUV, who were eventually hospitalized. Any single ladies out there? This guy really sounds like a winner.
