In a Q&A where one traveler asks how to experience SF during the tiny window of a four-hour layover, the New York Times recommends making a stop at curvy Lombard Street:

Then take the historic yet thrilling cable car (don’t worry, it goes pretty fast) past curvy Lombard Street, over Russian Hill and through the Union Square area where you’ll end at Powell and Market Streets and a BART station that will take you back to the airport just in time for final boarding.

sanfran.190While I’m happy to see the neighborhood receive a shout out, I find this travel editor’s suggestions less than thrilling. The Ferry Building, Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, and Lombard? That itinerary overlooks real San Francisco. That’s what you get from a New Yorker. What stops would you recommend? You know Polk Street would be on my list.
