Great typical French brasserie. Thonet bentwood chairs, dimly lit, and chic menu typography. La nourriture…c’est TBD.UPDATE on Cafe des Amis (2000 Union at Buchanan):

  • Sauvignon Blance aux pichet (by the carafe!) . . . delicieux!
  • French onion soup . . . to die for!
  • Hanger steak-frites . . . overcooked (medium was medium well), semi-bland, but bearnaise sauce was scrumptious.
  • Upside down almond cake with plums . . . indulgent!
  • Complimentary mini 1″ square salted brownie . . . perhaps the definitive reason I’ll be returning asap!

P.S. The lovely Eggplant Elephant was my dinner date!

Photo by Hiroshi Sugimoto, from the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.Alhambra’s got international appeal! According to Flickr:

Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948. ‘Alhambra, San Francisco,’ (1992) is part of a long-standing and on-going project of photographing theatres. Sugimoto records the ambient light created by the cinema screen. The drama of the light effect is balanced by the ‘neutrality’ of the camera position, always directly facing the screen.

Today’s deal on FreshGuide is $5 for $10 worth of sweetness at rice pudding and frozen yogurt shop Loving Cup (2356 Polk at Union). The creamery of sorts takes a creative twist on dessert staples with flavors like rum raisin, pistachio, pumpkin pie, almond butter, English toffee, and chai-infused pudding, and also has a full coffee bar and other sweets like cupcakes and rice krispie treats. Go ahead. You deserve it.

FreshGuide‘s latest deal (ending soon!) is $30 for $85 worth of yoga at The Pad Studios (1690 Union at Gough). If you haven’t been, I highly recommend it. I had a six month membership at The Pad this past year and loved every minute of it. It’s a really clean and hip-looking studio with great instructors and sweet owners. The power yoga classes are small, with fun music! And actually, the studio offers a 10 sessions for $10 deal for new customers, which you should try first before exercising this deal. I could go on, but I’ll just leave it at two thumbs up.

A friend just emailed me asking if I’d heard anything about an accident that happened last night on Union St. between Larkin and Polk. She says, “Some (presumably) super drunk driver totaled at least five parked cars as he bashed into them on his way down the hill at about 1 a.m.” I haven’t heard anything about the accident, or been able to find any details. Have you?

The Polk Street Blues Festival is coming to “Upper Polk” between Pacific and Union Streets on September 25th and 26th 2010! [I know, I know, you wanted to take it easy that month.] The only free blues event in the city, the fest will “feature two main stages, a merchant market place, arts and crafts, gourmet food booths, a large family area, café seating areas and much more.” Considering that nearly every other neighborhood has a festival during the year, this is kind of exciting. The event’s expected to bring 40,000 people to the ‘hood. If you’re an artist or gourmet food producer interested in exhibiting, rates, now $300, go up (+$50) beginning Jan. 15, so hurry, hurry.

    Bienvenue L’Homme Du Polk

There’s a delightful new antiques shop in the former Kissmet space on Polk called Homme (2354 Polk Street at Union). When I wandered in yesterday, the owner, Michelle, was fashioning herself a feathered hairpiece for New Year’s Eve. As it turns out, in addition to working as interior designer, she also counts herself a hatter (she makes hats). She studied in England with a “mentor” to learn millinery and, lucky for you, sells some of her exquisite creations in the shop.

As for the décor, she said designers have come into Homme asking what her “M.O.” is and she’s hesitantly . . . not sure. She doesn’t sell any product — she sells antiques, vintage furnishings, and one-of-a-kind pieces. “In with the old, out with new,” you might say. But you’ll find things big and small in there, from a deliciously aromatic bar of soap to a wide mirrored console. Style runs the gamut, too; a ’50s space-age Sputnik pendant hangs alongside a sculpture-like Art Deco light fixture and a floral tole Hollywood Regency chandelier.

Homme’s also got artwork covered, from small wood-mounted prints to pop-inspired photography to a large scale mixed media orchid painting (at left). Oh — and Michelle painted that one, too. Is there anything she can’t do?

    To see the hats, (more…)
